Preface

Wilson Ruiz has long been an independent international TV producer. Visit his website: www.msd-global.com In 2000 Ruiz produced "Global Cities." This series documents the impact of migration in six global cities - New York, London, Tokyo, Frankfurt, Mexico City and Toronto.
Now that migration has become one of the most important and pressing global issues of our time Ruiz is planning a second round of Global Cities and joined up with Frank Purschwitz from C-it Productions. Visit his website: www.c-itproductions.com  They will begin with a remake of "TORONTO: A World in a City." This remake will feature the same multicultural characters from two decades ago, it will document how they have adjusted to life in Toronto while at the same time helping to change the city.

The Video below is the original Documentary from 2000:

PRODUCTION TREATMENT

We go inside the world of the four main characters with direct and
indirect interviews, answering and asking questions as we accompany them
in their daily life. They tell their own stories in their own words.

The audience also gets to know the characters visually as we blend long dramatic scenes with quick reportage style realistic scenes. Our aim is to give the viewer comprehensive information about the topic of the stories while keeping in mind that stories should also entertain.

The stories of the four main characters will document how they have adjusted to life in multicultural Toronto while at the same time helping to change the city. These stories will be spread across the documentaty intercut with brief investigative reports dealingg with diversity in Toronto and its consecuences.

MICHAEL ADAMS

* MICHAEL ADAMS ENVIRONICS INSTITUTE STORY
Length: 3 min. 30 sec.

Michael Adams is a noted commentator on social values and social change in North America. He has put together a compelling set of studies and statistics, covering a broad range of issues and debates on social diversity and multiculturalism in Canada.  Michael Adams is the president of the Environics group of research and communications consulting companies which he co-founded in 1970. In 2006 he founded the Environics Institute for Survey Research, where he also serves as President.

For the Michael Adams / Environics Institute story we are developing three self-contained  segments which will be spread throughout the documentary and intercut with segments from the other multicultural characters featured in "TORONTO: A World in a City."

* Michael Adams Environics Institute Segment One "Unlikely Utopia"
Length: 30 sec.

For almost five decades Michael Adams has challenged the prevalent attitude that Canada is being overwhelmed by immigrants who are not integrating into mainstream society choosing instead to maintain their own practices and customs. What motivates Adams and gives him strength to firmly believe in social diversity and  multiculturalism with strident voices expressing concern about "ethnic enclaves" and other supposed signs of social fracture in Canada.

* Michael Adams Environics Institute Segment Two "Inside the Environics
Institute"
Length: 90 sec.

The Environics Institute for Survey Research was established by Michael Adams in 2006 to promote relevant and original public opinion and social research on important issues of public policy and social change. The focus of the Institute’s mandate is to survey individuals and groups not usually heard from, asking questions not normally asked. How does The Environics Institute pursues this mission?

* Michael Adams Environics Institute Segment Three "Living in Toronto"
Length: 90 sec.

We will feature Michael Adams as he appears in the first episode of "Toronto: A World in a City" produced in the year 2000. We will then cut to Michael Adams 2016 as he takes us on a tour of "his Toronto" to show how his city has become the most diverse city in Canada and one of the most multicultural cities in the world, and how this change has affected his own life.

RATNA OMIDVAR

THE HONORABLE RATNA OMIDVAR GLOBAL DIVERSITY EXCHANG (GDX) STORY
Length: 3 min. 30 sec

The HONORABLE Ratna Omidvar, Senator, Senate of Canada is an internationally recognized expert on migration, diversity and inclusion. She came to Canada from Iran in 1981 and her own experiences of displacement, integration and citizen engagement have been the foundation of her work. She is the founding Executive Director and currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Global Diversity Exchange (GDX), Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University.

We are planning three self-contained segmonts on the GDX and Ratna Omidvar. This story will be spread throughout the documentary and intercut with scenes of the other main characters featured in "TORONTO: A WOrld in a City."

* Ratna Omidvar and the GDX Segment One "GDX a think-and-do tank"
Length: 90 sec.

The GDX is  based in Toronto at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University and funded by the Maytree Foundation. GDX is a think-and-do tank on diversity, migration and inclusion that connects local experience and ideas with global networks. Under the leadership of founding Executive Director Ratna Omidvar, the GDX team identifies and amplifies the links between diversity, migration and prosperity, and anchors these in policy, research and practice.

* Ratna Omidvar and the GDX Segment Two "Diversity brings Prosperity"
Length: 90 seconds

GDX programs seek to close the opportunity gap experienced by many newcomers to our cities and countries. Research and experience tells us that immigrant success is all too often stymied by barriers to participation and the artificial poverty of exclusion. GDX programs seek to unlock the unrealized potential of immigrant skill and talent, by connecting people to solutions and working strategically to collapse natural timelines so we can accelerate together towards the goal of shared prosperity. When immigrants prosper we all do.

* Ratna Omidvar and the GDX Segment Three  "The HONORABLE Ratna Omidvar"
Length: 30 sec.

Ratna Omidvar came to Canada from Iran in 1981 and has lived her own experiences of displacement. She is an internationally recognized expert on migration, diversity and inclusion. Integration and citizen engagement have been the foundation of her work. In April 2016, Prime Minister Trudeau appointed Ratna Omidvar to the Senate of Canada as an independent
Senator representing the Province of Ontario.

MOSES ZNAIMER

MOSES ZNAIMER ZOOMERMEDIA STORY
Length: 3 min. 30 sec

International renowned Canadian broadcater Moses Znaimer - President and CEO of ZoomerMedia Limited - a global leader in creating information, entertainment and experiences uniquely designed to serve the world’s largest and most affluent generation – the 45-plus. That’s why, in 2008, Moses Znaimer announced his New Vision of Aging for multicultural Canada with media exclusively focused on its needs and interests, and serving as the voice of the revolution in aging.

We are developing three self-contained segments for this story they will be spread throughout the documentary and intercut with scenes of other main characters featured in "TORONTO: A WOrld in a City."

* Moses Znaimer ZoomerMedia Segment One "The voice of the revolution in aging"
Length: 90 sec.

In 2008 Moses  Znaimer's  insight was that even that massive market-moving and ultra youthful generation known as the Baby Boomers had inevitably to age; and that if  they were considered dominant while they were young (because of their size), then surely they must still be dominant even if they were getting older. Today open a newspaper, turn on the television, read a blog, it’s likely you’ll find yet another story about the enormous power and influence of the 45-plus population – the people who are literally reinventing aging.

That’s why in 2008 Moses Znaimer announced his New Vision of Aging for Canada – a vision that would provide the 45-plus population with media exclusively focused on its Needs and interests, validating its importance, championing its rights and serving as the voice of the revolution in aging.

* Moses Znaimer ZoomerMedia Segment Two "Welcome to ZoomerMedia"
Length: 90 sec.

Today, the essential building blocks of ZoomerMedia are in place. Marketers are beginning to pay attention, shifting demographic targets more toward the older age groups. ZoomerMedia will continue to evolve, adding more content, more formats, more ways to help and inspire this audience to live longer and live better.

* Moses Znaimer ZoomerMedia Segment Three "The President's message"
Length:  30 sec.

"It is not often that a plan conceived in a flash of insight and intuition actually comes to any fruition at all, let alone perfectly. My Intuition was that a multimedia company devoted to the 15.3 Million Canadians who are 45-plus would strengthen immeasurably an organization devoted to looking after the rights and interests of all Canadians as we age; and vice versa. Thus, I set out to acquire or create titles – on all platforms: broadcast, print, digital," Moses Znaimer explains.

KRISTYN WONG-TAM

KRISTYN WONG-TAM DIVERSITY ADVOCATE STORY
Length: 3 min 30 sec.

She is identified as the leading diversity advocate in Toronto City Council. She is councillor for the Toronto Centre-Rosedale electoral district (Ward 27), one of the most multicultural neighbourhoods in the city. She was elected to Toronto City Council in the 2010 city council election.

Born in Hong Kong, she immigrated to Toronto with her family in 1975. Wong-Tam came out as a lesbian in high school, at the age of 16, and has been an activist for both LGBTQ and Asian Canadian community issues. For the story of Kristyn Wong-Tam, the diversity advocate in Toronto City Council, we are developing three self-contained segments which will be spread throughout the documentary and intercut with segments from the other main characters.

* Kristyn Wong-Ta Diversity Advocate Segment One "A Diversity Advocate"
Length: 90 sec.

Why did she become the leading diversity advocate in Toronto City Council? How did she address the issue? What were some of the barriers she had to face? Was it challenging due to Toronto's well-known and appreciated diversity?

* Kristyn Wong-Ta Diversity Advocate Segment Two "Living Diversity"
Length: 90 sec.

We see Councillor Wong-Tam encouraging and promoting diversity to her constituents in the Toronto Centre-Rosedale electoral district (Ward 27), and to the citizens across the city.

* Kristyn Wong-Ta Diversity Advocate Segment Three "The Future is Now"
Length 30 sec.

How does she envision diversity in Toronto 20 years from now? Keep in mind that the first episode of this documentary produced in 2006 looked at diversity and multiculturalism at the beginning of the 21st Century.

INVESTIGATIVE REPORTS

  • 1) What has made it easier for Toronto to integrate immigrants with relative success compared to other cities
  • 2) What makes Toronto one of the most diverse cities on earth?
  • 3) What's a neighborhood that exemplifies Toronto's diversity?
  • 4) Afro-Canadians claim anti-blak racism by the Toronto Police force.
  • 5) The high tech economy and the immigrant labor market.
  • 6) Challenges in integrating. The first generatioon is alqays going to have challenges integrating. Italians and Greeks settling in Toronto in the 1950's faced similar kinds of discrmination as do Muslims and other immigrants today.
  • 7) In 2000 we interviewed Yilmaz Ciyayi, a 15-year-old immigrant from Kurdistan whose only dream was to go back to Kurdistan and help it become an independent country. The Toronto Kurdestan community group to which Yilmaz belonged to was considered a terrorist group by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS.) In 2016 Yilmaz Ciyayi was killed in combat fighting ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) alongside Kurd guerrillas. He was giving a hero's homecoming as a Canadian killed fighting ISIS terrorists. He has been declared a martyr of humanity while family and friends hold memorial services for him. But the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) refuses to apologize to the Ciyayi family for labelling Yilmaz a terrorist.
  • 8) Two-thirds of Canadians want prospective immigrants to be screened for anti-Canadian values a new poll reveals (Forum Reserch Inc poll released Sept 12 2016) the idea is to screen newcomers for their attitudes on intolerance toward other religions, cultures and sexual orientation and reluctance to embrace Canadian freedoms. Who exactly would define what Canadian values are and how immigrats would be tested.
